Nacida en Newcastle, Australia, Nicki comenzó su formación musical a los cuatro años con el piano, al que siguió poco después con la flauta. A los quince años se pasó al contrabajo. Tras graduarse en el instituto, se mudó a Sídney para estudiar jazz en el Conservatorio de Música de Nueva Gales del Sur, donde empezó a tocar con músicos australianos como Mike Nock, Dale Barlow, Paul Grabowsky, Bernie McGann y Ten Part Invention.
